Adams Media Research is predicting DVD sales will generate $14.8 billion this year, up from a record $12.1 billion. "The first quarter was hot and have things have started to pick up even more," said Tom Adams, president of Adams Media Research. "The second half of the year is looking like it will be strong, and I think final sales will be in the range we're predicting."

The holiday sales season will get off to an early start with the Aug. 31 release of "The Passion of the Christ," the cultural phenomenon that generated $380 million at the box office. That will be followed by the big slate of summer hits led by "Shrek 2" and "Spider-Man 2," which could both eclipse the all-time DVD sales mark of $20 million held by "Finding Nemo."
